1870 (17 Oct.) pale blue envelope from Dunedin to Bolton, marked "Via Suez & Marseilles", this route closed due to the Franco-Prussian War and diverted on to the
"Via Brindisi" route, bearing 4d. yellow and 6d. red-brown twice cancelled by "O" duplex and showing a superb strike of the rare framed "insufficiently paid/for brindisi route/deficient postage/d3"

122. provenance: John Woolfe, October 2006 Note: The outbreak of the Franco-Prussian War on 15 July 1870 resulted in difficulties with the route through France, and from September of that year
mail to Europe endorsed "via Marseilles" and prepaid at the appropriate premium rate was diverted to the route via Brindisi. The September and October mails from New Zealand were surcharged 3d. per half ounce on delivery in the United Kingdom, where
an explanatory handstruck marking was applied. This was the rate difference in charges in the United Kingdom for letters sent by the alternative routes, though for letters from New Zealand the actual rate difference was 5d. per half ounce. The only
other cover recorded with this handstamp is illustrated on page 59 of Vol. VII of the RPSNZ handbook. (Image) |

1873 (14 May) envelope from Dunedin to London, marked "via Brindisi", bearing 3d. lilac and 1871 6d. pale blue thrice cancelled with "O" duplex and showing red
London Paid c.d.s. (8.7) at foot; light vertical crease just clear of the 3d. value though an attractive franking at the reduced 9d. rate. R.P.S. Certificate (2006). Sc. 33, 41; S.G. 117, 136.
provenance: John Woolfe, October 2006 Note: With the opening of the Mount Cenis Tunnel the mails closed two days later and now went via Brindisi, Mount Cenis Tunnel and Calais. The letter rate remained 10d. until 2 January 1873 when
it reverted to the earlier rate of 9d. per half ounce. The "Baroda" which was to carry the mail from Melbourne to Galle, had problems on arrival in Melbourne due to the Second Mate contracting smallpox. The ship was moored in the bay, thoroughly
fumigated, and all the "Lascars" and "Chinamen" clothing thrown overboard. All on board were re-vaccinated. The Melbourne passengers and mail were taken out to the "Baroda" by the steamer "Williams" and no serious delays occurred. (Image) |
