#594, 1c Green coil waste, a phenomenal quality used example of one of the most notoriously difficult stamps in U.S. philately to find in premium condition,
possessing near perfect centering within large margins, deep luxuriant color and impression on bright paper, very light strike of a machine postmark, extremely fine. The One Cent Green Coil Waste issue of 1923 is one of the rarest U.S. stamps of
the 20th century, with less than 100 copies known to exist. Its limited population is due to the fact that it was not discovered as an entirely new issue until two years after its issuance. To make it even more challenging, the vast majority of known
examples are terribly off center. In fact, the Scott catalog specifically mentions that their catalog value of $12,500.00 is for copies with perforations touching the frameline on one side. To find any example whose centering is above this standard
is a rarity, as we estimate that approximately only 10% of the existing copies are both sound and semi-well centered. However, to find one truly well centered and in premium condition is an almost impossible task. We are aware of only three stamps
that can be categorized as extremely fine examples, including the stunning copy offered here from the Minervino collection.A key rarity in outstanding condition for the finest collection of United States stamps. Accompanied by 1982, 1992 and 2000
PF certificates, as well as a 2009 PSE certificate (VF-XF 85; SMQ $67,000.00). This is one of only two Scott #594's to have been graded 85 by the PSE, the highest grade awarded to date. The next highest graded example is a Fine 70,
illustrating the rarity of any example that is well centered; ex-Dr. Joyce. (Image) |

#1/71, C1/18, The desirable balance of the James M. Minervino collection, several hundred different single stamps all neatly housed in a Scott National hingeless album, mostly mint with just a few being used, just like most of his single lots
in the sale, the vast majority of the stamps found in this collection balance are of superior quality than typically found in collection lots, with each stamp having been selected by Mr. Minervino for its choice centering, strong fresh color and
light hinging (if not never hinged), most stamps are in the lower to medium catalog value range, but there are certainly a number of stamps that are more valuable, the 19th century portion of the collection is sparse but what is present is quite
nice, including a handsome used 5c 1847 Issue, along with four margined examples of both the 5c and 10c 1875 Reproductions of the 1847 issue, the collection really picks up with the 1890-93 Small Bank Notes forward to 1934 and virtually all are mint
at this point, in this time period highlights include the 1893 Columbians to the $1.00 (less the 3c and 6c) strong Bureau issues including a watermarked $1.00, Trans-Mississippis complete to the 10c, 1901 Pan-Americans complete, the
Washington-Franklin era is especially well represented with a plethora of choice quality singles, including coil singles, the 1922-26 Regular issues are all complete, as are the Kansas-Nebraska overprints, a select White Plains souvenir sheet, and
concluding with air posts nearly complete, including the 1918 and 1923 series, as well as a handsome set of 1930 Graf Zeppelins (lightly hinged), we have noted small flaws on less than ten stamps, with all others being unusually choice, o.g. or used
in a few cases, lightly hinged or never hinged on the mint stamps, the great majority very fine or better; a marvelous collection upon which to build or the perfect lot for the retailer of premium quality United States stamps; an impressive 56
certificates accompany (largely PF certificates). |
