Used with Samoa, 1890, 1p Yellow Green, 2p Orange Brown, Perf 12 x 11-1/2 (11b, 13b), all stamps tied by three strikes of large dotted grid cancel on 1888 cover to Washington D.C., magenta "San Francisco Paid All Aug. 4" and receiving backstamps, 5c small flaw at top of vignette oval VERY FINE. A RARE MIXED-FRANKING COVER FROM SAMOA TO THE UNITED STATES. The Odenweller book notes that the grids tying the Samoa and U.S. stamps are different, but we think they are identical and were likely applied to all three stamps on arrival in San Francisco. Tied by segmented cork cancel, used with Samoa, 1886, -1/2p Brown Violet, 1p Yellow Green, 4p Blue, Perf 12 x 11-1/2 (9, 11, 16), four horizontal pairs of -1/2p, vertical strip of three and two horizontal pairs of 1p, single 4p, tied by blue "Apia, Samoa, Feb. 1" double-circle datestamps on registered cover to Leipzig, Germany, red "Registered, Feb. 16, 1889, San Francisco Cal." four-line datestamp, New York registry label, New York and receiving backstamps, minor edgewear VERY FINE. A COLORFUL AND RARE FRANKING ON A REGISTERED COVER FROM SAMOA TO GERMANY, PAYING FIVE-TIMES 3-PENCE RATE PLUS REGISTRY FEE. The Odenweller census lists only one other with a similar franking, mailed on the exact same day but to a different recipient in Leipzig.
