FINE APPEARANCE. USED PAIRS OF THE 1853 13-CENT KAMEHAMEHA III ISSUE ARE EXCEEDINGLY RARE. THIS IS THE ONLY PAIR KNOWN TO US WITH THE "U.S. POSTAGE PAID" OVAL.
There is no used multiple of the 13c 1853 larger than a pair, probably because the denomination included the 2c ship fee, which was the rate per letter, regardless of weight. Using more than one 13c stamp involved wasting 2c for every extra stamp. The "U.S./POSTAGE PAID" oval used to cancel this pair was employed by the Honolulu post office on a limited basis in 1853, then altered by removing the "U.S." in 1859 for use on the Numerals.

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A SUPERB EXAMPLE OF THE 1853 13-CENT KAMEHAMEHA III ISSUE CANCELLED BY THE RED HONOLULU DATESTAMP.
The 13c 1853 Issue is quite scarce in used condition, and sound examples with four margins are rare. This is certainly one of the finest used copies extant. (Image)
