This is believed to be the only used strip of four extant. Pictured in Meyer-Harris (p. 130) on its original quadruple-rate cover, from which it was removed.

FINE APPEARANCE. A RARE EXAMPLE OF THE 1857 5-CENT KAMEHAMEHA III SECOND PRINTING WITH A STRONG DOUBLE IMPRESSION. ONLY NINE EXAMPLES ARE RECORDED.

According to Fred Gregory, at least two sheets of 20 were doubly printed. On stamps from one sheet the double impression is visible along the left side of the design. On stamps from the second sheet the doubling is visible across the entire design.

Most double impressions occur when the first impression is made and found to be inadequate. The paper is then put in the press a second time, where it receives the heavier impression. It is a common misconception that the weaker impression is the second one.

Turrill, in care of D. P. Belknap in San Francisco, clearly struck "Ship 5" handstamp and "San Francisco Cal. Dec. 19, 1861" double-circle datestamp, stamp with tear at right mostly in margin

VERY FINE. AN ATTRACTIVE AND RARE USE OF THE 1857 5-CENT KAMEHAMEHA III SECOND PRINTING ON COVER TO SAN FRANCISCO WITH "SHIP 5" DUE MARKING.

This cover was carried on the American whaling ship Harrison, which departed Honolulu on Dec. 3, 1861, and arrived in San Francisco on Dec. 18. Mail was postmarked at San Francisco on the following day. The addressee is believed to be the daughter of Joel Turrill, a prominent attorney and congressman from Oswego, New York. He had served as U.S. Consul to the Hawaiian Islands (1845-50). In the financial crisis of 1857 he lost all of his property, and he died in December 1859. This cover was addressed to her in care of D. P. Belknap, a prominent San Francisco resident. Belknap presumably paid the 5c incoming ship-letter postage. A cover from the same correspondence, which was forwarded with three U.S. 1c stamps, was sold in our Wagshal Part 4 sale (Sale 1006, lot 1372) (Image)

EXTREMELY FINE. A REMARKABLE MIXED-FRANKING COVER WITH THE 1857 5-CENT KAMEHAMEHA SECOND PRINTING FROM POSITION 2 -- THE LINE THRU "HONOLULU" TRANSFER VARIETY -- AND UNITED STATES 12-CENT 1851 ISSUE.

This cover was carried on the schooner Liholiho, which departed Honolulu on Apr. 26, 1858 (mail was datestamped on Apr. 21) and arrived in San Francisco on May 21 (mail for the East Coast was datestamped on June 5).
