VERY FINE EXAMPLE OF THE 1862 2-CENT NUMERAL ON GREENISH BLUE PAPER.

VERY FINE. THE 1862 2-CENT NUMERAL ON GREENISH BLUE PAPER IS EXCEEDINGLY RARE ON A FULL COVER. THIS IS ONE OF THE OUTSTANDING NUMERAL ISSUE COVERS EXTANT.
Almost all of the "on cover" examples of the 1862 2c on Greenish Blue paper are on pieces or fronts only from the Bishop correspondence. This magnificent cover with the stamp cancelled in red and a matching Honolulu datestamp comes from the Lyman correspondence.
The addressee, Isabella (Chamberlain) Lyman, married Frederick Schwartz Lyman on February 16, 1861. Isabella was the youngest daughter of the missionaries, Levi Chamberlain, who arrived at Honolulu April 27, 1823, and Maria (Patten) Chamberlain, who came on March 30, 1828, one of a group of four unmarried women teachers, the first to join the Hawaiian Mission.

VERY FINE. AN EXTREMELY RARE FULL COVER BEARING THE 1862 2-CENT NUMERAL ON GREENISH BLUE PAPER.
Almost all of the "on cover" examples of the 1862 2c on Greenish Blue paper are on pieces or fronts only from the Bishop correspondence. This cover comes from the Goodale correspondence.
The addressee, Warren Goodale, was a tutor in the Royal School in Honolulu and subsequently was appointed Marshal of the Kingdom and Collector of Customs. He was one of two men present at Fort Honolulu when it was raided by the French in August 1849. After his wife Ellen's death in 1861 (see lot 365), he moved his family back to Massachusetts and served in the Civil War. He subsequently resettled in Hawaii where he was involved in the sugar industry.
