Four-page folded letter datelined "Lahaina July 1st, 1823" from Clarissa Lyman Richards, wife of the Reverend William Richards, to Elizabeth Bishop in "Honoruru Oahu", she writes to her friend (in part): "My dear friend enquires if I have experienced any new and unforseen missionary trials -- trials that I did not anticipate when entering on the work. All that I have seen and experienced has not yet altered my previous opinion that all mankind are by nature supremely selfish. But had I embarked a few months earlier I should have been astonished at beholding on missionary ground any exhibition of a selfish and depraved heart. I am indebted to the kindness of a christian brother, one who had seen much of the world, & had been a missionary himself, for correct views on this subject as well as for much useful information. How lamentable that those who follow in the steps of apostles and martyrs exhibit so little of their spirit! Small folded letter from Lucy Thurston in Kailua to Delia Stone Bishop on Oahu, datelined "Kailua Dec. 16, 1829", letter records two instances of adultery: "One of the females who came up from Oahu on board that vessel is now paying the penalty of a broken law -- the Capt. her seducer. I must add still more -- our own beloved Thomas Hopu is now suspended from the church, has been put in irons... having acknowledged himself guilty of breaking the seventh commandment. He appears a real penitent, much borne down both in body & mind. Indeed it is affecting to see him. His seducer & accomplice is one of the most interesting women of Kaawaloa, & a few weeks previous to the affair, numbered among their converts. Bold strike of red circular datestamp on folded letter datelined "Punahou March 16th 1852" and addressed to Rev. Dwight Baldwin at Lahaina, one-page letter from his 15-year-old son in school, light vertical file folds, some toning, otherwise Very Fine, possibly the earliest use of the "Honolulu*Hawaiian-Islands" circular datestamp ordered by Postmaster Whitney, the earliest date for the "U.S. Postage Paid" version is Feb. 10, 1852, in addition to its early date, the example offered here is remarkable because it is struck on an inter-island letter, it was used almost exclusively on mail to other countries, the anachronism of the "Mar. 10" date in the postmark and the March 16 letter date can only be explained with "they made a mistake", ex Van Dyke (with his backstamp) (Image) Search for comparables at SiegelAuctions.com E. 1,000-1,500 SOLD for $4,250.00 Will close during Public Auction 47° "Wailuku P.O. Mar. 5". Manuscript postmark and "Free" on light blue folded letter datelined "Wailuku Mar. 3d 1851" from Rev. E. Bailey to Rev. D. Baldwin at Lahaina (both towns located on Maui), letter discusses land matters, light horizontal file fold VERY FINE. THIS IS THE EARLIEST FORM OF WAILUKU POSTMARK, APPLIED BY THE FIRST "UNOFFICIAL" POSTMASTER, REVEREND EDWARD W. BAILEY. WE KNOW OF ONE OTHER EXAMPLE. According to Gregory, the Wailuku post office was officially established in 1859. Prior to 1859, the Reverend Edward W. Bailey served as an unofficial postmaster. This Wailuku postmark, the later of two examples known to us, is in the hand of the Reverend Bailey. The "Free" was not necessary since inter- and intra-island mail was postage-free by legislative order until 1859, but Rev. Bailey wrote it on both postmarked letters (the other example was last offered in Sale 931, lot 4444).
