EXTREMELY FINE GEM WITH THE EXALTED P.S.E. GRADE OF XF-SUPERB 95. THIS IS EASILY ONE OF THE FINEST ORIGINAL-GUM EXAMPLES OF THE 90-CENT 1869 PICTORIAL ISSUE IN EXISTENCE. A MAGNIFICENT STAMP IN EVERY RESPECT.
The 90c 1869 Pictorial is widely admired for its beautiful engraving and dignified portrait of Abraham Lincoln. However, collectors have been frustrated in their efforts to acquire choice examples of this issue. Used 90c stamps are typically heavily cancelled, because the high denomination was cause for postal clerks to thoroughly obliterate any chance for re-use. Naturally, the significant monetary value of 90c in 1869 limited the number of unused stamps that would be saved for future collectors. Therefore, the collector ideals of "well-centered with original gum" and "lightly cancelled" are seldom obtainable in the available supply of 90c 1869's. The stamp offered here, with lightly hinged original gum and choice centering, probably ranks among the top 1% of surviving 90c 1869's in unused state.
Ex Scarsdale. 1997 P.F. certificate no longer accompanies. With 2012 P.S.E. certificate (OGh, XF-Superb 95, SMQ $67,000.00). This is the highest grade awarded to date and only one other shares this grade. (Image)

VERY FINE. AN EXCEPTIONALLY CHOICE AND RARE SOUND USED EXAMPLE OF THE 15-CENT 1869 PICTORIAL INVERT. THE COLORS ARE RICH AND DEEP, AND THE TARGET CANCEL LEAVES MOST OF THE VIGNETTE CLEARLY VISIBLE. ONLY 93 COPIES ARE RECORDED IN OUR CENSUS.
Our census of 1869 Inverts, published in the February 1999 Chronicle and updated with three new stamps, contains 93 examples of the 15c Invert, including three unused and 90 used (one in the British Library's Tapling collection).
Ex De Verymont, Seymour, Ishikawa and Dauer. Census No. 119b-CAN-NC01. With 2012 P.S.E. certificate (F 70, SMQ $55,000.00). This is the highest grade which is priced in SMQ. (Image)
VERY FINE AND CHOICE SOUND EXAMPLE OF THE 24-CENT 1869 INVERT.
Our published 1869 Invert census (with unpublished updates) contains 89 copies of the perforated 24c Invert, including four unused stamps and multiples. Very few are sound or as attractive as the stamp offered here.
Census No. 120b-CAN-CW04. Ex Twigg-Smith and Hansen. 1970 and 2001 P.F. certificates no longer accompany. With 2012 P.S.E. certificate (F 70, SMQ $63,500.00). Only one has graded higher to date (at 75) and only two others share this grade. The Scott value for No. 120b is for "fine centered examples with only minimal faults." (Image)
