Lot Sym. Lot Description
3001   ImageJohn Hancock. Signer of Declaration of Independence, delegate from Massachusetts, beautiful flourishing signature as President of the Continental Congress on document dated July 1, 1775, appointing Joshua Merril Gent as ensign in Capt. Noyes's Company, in the 31st Regiment, commanded by Col. Phinney, some splitting along folds barely touches signature

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. A WONDERFUL EXAMPLE OF JOHN HANCOCK'S SIGNATURE ON AN OFFICIAL DOCUMENT FROM HIS TIME AS PRESIDENT OF THE CONTINENTAL CONGRESS.

John Hancock was elected President of the Continental Congress on May 24, 1775, approximately five weeks prior to when this was signed. He served until Oct. 29, 1777. Colonel Phinney's regiment was the first raised in Cumberland County, just days after the battles at Lexington and Concord. On June 24, 1775, Phinney's 31st regiment was ordered by the Congress to march 400 men to Cambridge; they started just after the 1st of July, at around the time this document was signed. For additional information, the book History of Colonel Edmund Phinney's 31st Regiment of Foot, Eight Months' Service Men of 1775 is freely available on the internet (Image)
