3223° ng ImageCANADA, 1857, 6p Reddish Purple, Very Thick Soft Wove (10; SG 23). Unused (no gum), large margins all around, uncommonly fresh, with rich color and a fine impression, minute surface scrape at top that is barely perceptible and almost unworthy of mention

VERY FINE. A DESIRABLE EXAMPLE OF THIS IMMENSELY RARE UNUSED STAMP.

It is believed less than twelve unused examples exist in private hands. Virtually all are no gum (see the following lot for the exception) and most have faults to some degree (some are extensively faulty or repaired). This example is among the finest of the small number known.

3224 og ImageCANADA, 1857, 6p Reddish Purple, Very Thick Soft Wove (10; SG 23). Disturbed original gum, h.r., large margin at right, close to in at bottom, rich color, some faults incl. 4mm repaired internal tear and light diagonal crease (neither of which is noticeable from the front)

NEARLY FINE APPEARANCE. DESPITE THE FAULTS, THIS MAY BE THE ONLY ORIGINAL GUM EXAMPLE OF THE 1857 6-PENCE REDDISH PURPLE IN PRIVATE HANDS. A RARITY OF CANADA.

Unused (no gum) examples alone are seldom offered and we suspect that no more than 6-12 examples are known. From our research, we have been unable to find another original gum example in private hands. The only other known, with part original gum, resides in the Tapling Collection at the British Museum.
