EXTREMELY FINE. A SUPERB AND RARE EXAMPLE OF THE "LAUP/HILO" HAND-CARVED TOWN POSTMARK. ONLY THREE EXAMPLES OF THIS DISTINCTIVE AND UNUSUAL HAWAIIAN TOWN MARKING ARE RECORDED, ALL OF WHICH ARE CONTAINED IN THE GOLDEN COLLECTION.

The "LAUP/HILO" marking comes from the Laupahoehoe post office in the North Hilo district on the island of Hawaii. Laupahoehoe means "smooth lava tongue" in Hawaiian. We record only three examples of this highly unusual and elaborate marking: 1) Scott No. 13, Plate 1-A, Type IV, tied on piece by two strikes, the example offered here, ex Worthington, Caspary, Boker and Ishikawa, 2) Scott No. 13, Plate 1-A, Type V, tied on piece by single strike, ex Caspary, offered in this sale as lot 345, and 3) Scott No. 13, Plate 1-A, Type III, originally part of a plate reconstruction in the Tows sale (lot 421A), later affixed to a cover and offered in the Ishikawa sale (also ex Van Dyke), offered in this sale as lot 346.

This stamp has a fascinating history. It first appeared as part of a plate reconstruction in the October 1948 auction of the Tows collection (lot 421A). It was exhibited on cover as part of the Van Dyke collection at the Hawaiian Philatelic Exhibition in November 1968. Van Dyke claimed to have acquired it eight years prior (on cover) from the estate of Dr. Wetmore, a Hilo physician. This stamp is also mentioned as being on cover in Hawaiian Town Marks, 1850-1900 by E. J. Burns and was offered as such in a Siegel sale on June 23, 1971. Its next appearance at auction, also on cover, was in the 1980 sale of the Ishikawa collection. The item was subsequently acquired by Mr. Golden and removed from the cover.
